“The free use of sugar in any form tends to clog the system, and is not unfrequently a cause of disease.” (CT, p.57). Eating sugary foods are not only bad for your heart but also for your bones. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 1998; 67: 1147-54 relates the fact that sugary foods decrease the good cholesterol (HDL) which help to protect the arteries from plaque formation in the arteries. Those children who ate the most sugar had HDL levels 20% lower than those who ate the least. In our effort to reduce fat in our diets, many times we substitute sugar. “Replacing fat calories with sugary foods, including fat-free, high-sugar baked goods, can harm arteries. A better choice: complex carbohydrates (grains, fruits, vegetables, bread, pasta), which did not appear to lower HDLs in the study.” Large amounts of sugar also weaken the bones of children. This is because the sugar increases the excretion of calcium and  magnesium from the body through the kidneys. So for the best health, leave the sugary foods on the store shelf.
